KN@PPSTER: Getting things back on the rails …
Now that the phrase “Steve Kubby” is the number one search on Technorati, the opportunists are starting to show up, obfuscating search results and making it difficult for readers to get actual information about the situation at hand by posting material that happens to mention Steve peripherally but is really just stuff pertaining to petty controversies they’re hopped up about.
Not very cool, guys … and I’ll remember and file it away for a day when I’m in a position to help — or harm — you, and act accordingly.
Ditto. A man’s life is on the line here. The only thing that may save Steve Kubby from a cruel and extraordinarily painful death is sufficient public attention for his plight and resulting public pressure to treat him compassionately. Speaking of compassion, anyone who thinks it’s cute to use his name as a spam keyword probably shouldn’t expect any from me if they ever cross my path.

I wouldn’t so much categorize what was going on as “spam” as just opportunism to grind some axes in the medical marijuana movement. Three or four different sites suddenly decided that it was important to post the transcript of a Pot TV forum post that mentions Kubby in passing, but is mostly about an internal movement tiff.
Everyone’s welcome to their arguments, of course … but it struck me as more than coincidental that multiple posts went up on different blogs (of similar design and possibly operated by the same people), mentioning Kubby but not ABOUT Kubby, right when Kubby’s name was getting big search coverage.
I’m sure the argument in question is important, but not nearly as important as trying to save someone’s life, right now, when time is of the essence.

Tom Knapp
Sorry, I left out a paragraph: The important thing to me was that people who were seeing “Steve Kubby” as the top search on Technorati, and clicking through, were seeing three or four articles in a row at the top that were about the movement argument, with no substantive material about Kubby — which would simply discourage them from looking further. I’m watching things. If necessary, I’m willing to do more posts that point to the relevant facts, so as to keep THOSE, rather than a bunch of stuff that most readers will neither care about nor probably even understand, in the spotlight.
