9/11 and the search for truth
I caught three films yesterday at a 9/11 film marathon: “9/11: The Great Illusion“, “9/11 Revisited” (w/ BYU Professor Stephen Jones) and “Loose Change” (2nd edition).
Each of these films makes the case that 9/11 was an “inside job“. I don’t feel comfortable categorically making such assertions myself. However, amidst the speculation there are enough (plenty, actually) facts presented and inconsistencies pointed out to convincingly prove to my own satisfaction that the American public have not gotten the whole truth regarding the events of that day, and that this was deliberate. Not that an attempted coverup would be out of character for the US government in the first place, but still…
I recommend watching all three, particularly “9/11 Revisited” featuring Professor Stephen Jones — because his efforts to say what he has to say have led to the university attempting to muzzle him. Infringements on academic freedom are often a reliable indicator that the targeted academic has something worthwhile to say. I’ll return to the Uptown Theater this evening for the 7PM Kansas City premiere of Alex Jones’s “Terrorstorm“.
Let me briefly add that my biggest problem with the 9/11 truth movement is not that they are willing to put forth and/or consider conspiracy theories. A conspiracy is, after all, merely a group of people that plans and acts upon intentions the rest of us might consider malevolent. In general terms, we could say that planning, action and malevolent intent (particularly among the Power Elite) is not at all merely imaginary. Unlike unicorns or the tooth fairy, these things exist amongst the human race.
Rather, my biggest problem with the 9/11 truth movement is that they overlook the obvious — namely, that even if the mainstream version of events is mostly or completely true, there is still a problem. There is a point which is still, five years later, lacking its deserved prominence in our public discourse.
That point is this…
Imperialistic U.S. foreign policy made something like 9/11 inevitable. While most people are cowed by aggression, some won’t be. Pigeons will come home to roost. The Power Elite didn’t have to carry out 9/11 in order to benefit from it. They undoubtedly, in general terms, saw it coming. Their critics certainly did. The attacks were, while thoroughly evil, a natural reaction to the bloodthirsty policies we have been letting the politicians in this country get away with.
This country has experimented with limited government, and that experiment has had some limited success — but the beast of government inevitably casts off chains of constitutional restraint. It can’t be contained again. It will have to be put down. We can’t turn back the clock. It’s time to move forward to a new and better conception of a free society — a stateless society.

I agree, Brad, that even if (and that’s a mighty big “if”) the Bush administration’s claims of 9/11/06 events are true, the acts of government made it all possible. The enormous amount of time spent by those poring over videos, documents and other pieces of evidence from the tragic events of 9/11/01 is mostly poor use of limited available time. How many more examples are needed of the harm caused by governments, for the very fact that they are rulers of everyone else?
Yes, a “return to the Constitution”, as so many urge, is not the answer since, as you phrase it, “the beast of government inevitably casts off chains of constitutional restraint.” I would add that the US Constitution never “contained” the “beast” since it simply created a different “beast” - government - than had existed previously elsewhere, but still a ruler.
Thanks for another well done piece.
I wrote my own more than reflection stemming from the 5th anniversary of September 11, 2001, including a review of government as “the problem”. Simply remembering what took place on that date is insufficient. Understanding the underlying reasons for the tragedy and comprehending a fundamental lasting solution require more, but are within the capabilities of anyone truly desirous of a society of individuals interacting to mutual benefit. http://selfsip.org/focus/morethanreflection.html

[…] Unfortunately, as Brad reminds us, “our” government has robbed us of full grounds to bark: There is a point which is still, five years later, lacking its deserved prominence in our public discourse. […]
“The Power Elite didn’t have to carry out 9/11 in order to benefit from it. They undoubtedly, in general terms, saw it coming. Their critics certainly did.”
And that’s the real conspiracy. Whether they had their fingers directly in it or not, they purposely destabilize the world all the time. The more terrorism there is the better off they are.
I think you make a good point about conspiracy theorists when you argue that they ignore the evil right in front of their faces, plain as day, in favor of a more elaborate and sexy evil.
The point should be that NOTHING the government is saying adds up. The history doesn’t add up, the evidence doesn’t add up, and the policies prosecuted in the war on terror certainly don’t add up. I don’t have a problem with speculating on a conspiracy, but that conspiracy should draw upon a larger systemic understanding of the situation than simply fingering the bad guys (as I argued recently).
