Another reason not to vote…

Another reason not to vote — it’s all a farce anyway. There has been a huge amount of ongoing criticism, for several years, of the use of “tamper friendly” electronic voting machines and software. Attempts to address the problem often meet with stonewalling from elections officials, indicating that they themselves often may have interests at stake.

As the old saying goes: “If voting could change anything, it would be illegal.“

My county (King County, WA) uses optical scan “fill in the bubble” paper ballots, giving voters in my county a false sense of security. The problem is that the paper ballots are counted by machine, also manufactured by Diebold. The only time that there’s a hand count is when there is a very close election, and then only after a machine recount. As we saw in Florida in 2000 and here in Washington in 2004 though, even a paper hand-count is very much open to problems. There is simply no way to properly secure an election, expecially when the person in charge is partisan. Katherine Harris is a classic example, but there are others across the country.
I believe that any time that there is an opportunity to obtain power, there are people who will cheat to get it, and the organizations that they are part of will help them to do it. The only fix is to do away with the power structures altogether.
