SDS fights the good fight, show your support

On March 23rd, 5 SDS/MDS activists were arrested in Congressman Vito Fossella’s office.

“Their crime? Reading the names of the (US) war dead aloud and demanding a meeting with their representative so they might discuss the extreme positions he holds on the Iraq War. These 5 activists are charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespass. They are demanding Fossella drop all charges and agree to a meeting.”

On April 13th, SDS at UCF spearheaded a walkout against the war of 300 students.

On April 20th:

Two SDS members were arrested in Dayton, Ohio today at a military recruitment center protest and are being held on $374 bail each, so we need to raise money for them since they’re young college students and need some help with it.”

To help with the bail:

“Go to http://movementforademocraticsociety.org and click on the “MDS Legal Fund” Paypal button on the right hand side.”

Last word I received on the above via email was that the activists were going to be released, but the bail fund needs ongoing support. Please give.

In Virginia, SDS has been under attack:

“This morning, Students for a Democratic Society organizers at the College of William and Mary were told by university administrators that their permit for the Mideast Convention, which begins today, had been revoked.

Please call (757-221-1693) and e-mail (gnichol@wm.edu) College President Gene Nichol to demand that he denounce this attack on civil liberties, reinstate the permit, and support students’ rights to assemble, speak and organize.”

In his 1967 book Containment and Change, New Left leader and former SDS president Carl Oglesby (about whom I’ve blogged previously) wrote the following still all-too-timely passage. (If it sounds a bit like Rothbard, well, Rothbard’s Transformation of the American Right shows up in the footnotes.)
